Mitigating Risk of Injury from Dog Walking
We all love our dogs. Besides being trusty companions, and cherished parts of the family, our dogs are often our exercise partners. They motivate us to get up and out for walks, runs, or play time. Care must be taken, however. A recent article published in CNN Health cited a Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) report that described how the simple activity of walking dogs may sometimes lead to risks of injury in older adults, such as possible fractures. The JAMA report details that from 2004 to 2017, researchers estimated that there were more than 32,000 emergency room cases of fractures associated with walking leashed dogs among people 65 and older. Cases increased from an estimated 1,671 ER visits in 2004 to 4,396 in 2017.
Injury risks can be mitigated, however, in order to keep those with in high risk potential enjoying their walks. For example, they may opt for smaller dog breeds that are easier to control. They may also choose to train their dogs not to pull or lunge. Finally, finding outlets for the dogs to regularly release energy will help keep them from being over exuberant.
We, at Pup Up Hooray, can help dog owners who are at higher risk of energy mitigate such risks. We offer a stimulating, enriching, and balanced environments to all our doggy guests during the day. We also offer a variety of training classes for dogs and their owners. Finally, when dogs need a boarding solution when owners are travelling or are otherwise temporarily unable to care for their dogs, we offer boarding packages that include a variety of fun activities and top notch care. We encourage dog owners to visit our website and see the services we offer, or visit us in person for a tour and a consultation.
